Woods played host to Leatherhead in a Suburban League game with an early kick-off so everyone could see the England game. Was it worth it? I am not sure!

The game started brightly with the Woods running the show, but again a lack of composure in front of goal was the team’s downfall. Play was pretty even with no obvious advantage to either side. But a mistake in the centre of the pitch did not seem a problem, until the Leatherhead striker found himself alone and finished well. The Woods retaliated and went close but the visitors were dangerous on the break.

However, it was the Woods who were looking the most likely to score, and from an amount of pressure the ball from a corner was swept home by skipper Jamie Lindsay. The game was still end to end with no-one completely dominating. Then virtually on the half-time whistle a lack of concentration within the Woods’ ranks resulted in Leatherhead retaking the lead.

Ben Dowsett, the Woods goalie was having an inspired game and kept his side in the match. In the second half Northwood made changes but clear cut chances were in a premium. However, Dominic Franklin was one-on-one with the goalie but the latter to spread himself well. Woods continued looking for an equalizer to no avail, and on rare occasions Ben came to their rescue.

Chances were going begging at the Leatherhead end, and their goal bore a charmed life. Lawrence, Hutchinson and Walters all had good chances, but Woods kept battling until finally running out of time.

There was a very good performances from Ben Dowsett in goal and from Jamie Lindsay. As we have said before, very good lessons being learned by the Woods youngsters. From the lads used, eight players were from either the Sunday under 18s or the Ryman Youth League side. There is a future for the club here, and the Woods must not waste it.
